Federal New Democrats called for an emergency House of Commons study into RCM thechronfather P allegations that agents of the Indian government are linked to homicides, extortions, and other violent crimes in Canada.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh on Tuesday made the request amid several other actions he said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should take. The other demands included levelling sanctions on the six Indian diplomats who were expelled by Canada on Monday and banning the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh network, which Mr. Singh described as a “right-wing, extremist, militant group.” The Hindu nationalist network is based in India.

Mr. Singh said the NDP want the committee study to look at other steps the government can take to protect Canadians.

“We need to do everything possible to keep people sa the chron father fe and to keep our democracy safe,” he said.

On Monday, the RCMP order phoenix tears and Mr. Trudeau held separate press conferences in which they alleged that Indian diplomats and consular officials are tied to organized crime in Canada and violent incidents targeting the South Asian community including killings, extortions, harassment, threats and coercion.

However the Mounties released the allegations without any detailed evidence and declined to say how many homicides are connected to the Indian agents, what time period they cover, how many Indian government officials are implicated, and how many police investigations are currently open in the matter.

Mr. Trudeau said that the police have “clear and compelling evidence” that Indian agents have engaged in, and continue to engage in, “activities that pose a significant threat to public safety.” Mr. Trudeau said that Indian officials have gathered information on Canadians through clandestine means. He said that information is then fed to criminal organizations, which subsequently commit violent crimes, including killing and extortion.

The Prime Minister said the police made the rare decision to release the information before investigations w order phoenix tears ere completed and charges laid in an attempt to disrupt the pattern of behaviour. The RCMP said they were releasing the information because of the escalating threat to public safety.

“The RCMP basically painted a picture that a foreign government is engaging criminal elements in Canada to perpetrate violence against Canadians,” Mr. Singh said. He was briefed on the issue on Monday by the Prime Minister’s national security and intelligence adviser Nathalie Drouin.

Mr. Singh said the crimes included shootings at Canadian’s homes, businesses and in their communities.

In order to strike an emergency hearing of the public safety committee, the NDP would need the support of at least some of the other parties in the House of Commons. Neither the Liberals, Conservatives or Bloc Québécois immediately responded to The Globe when asked if they would support such a study.

Despite repeated questioning from reporters, Mr. Singh declined to say on Tuesday whether he and his family were among those targeted by the Indian government. In June he told reporters he had learned that he is a target of foreign interference but he never specified from which country.

“It’s not about me,” Mr. Singh said. Instead he told reporters the seriousness of the RCMP’s allegations released on Monday should be enough to leave all Canadians worried.

“Talking about myself does not in any way help Canadians,” Mr. Singh said.

China and India are identified by Canadian intelligence agencies as leading perpetrators of foreign interference in this country.

In total, the RCMP said 30 people have so far been charged in connection to homicides and cases of extortion and the police alleged that some of those individuals are connected to the Indian government.

In addition, RCMP Commissioner Michael Duheme said police have uncovered “well over a dozen credible and imminent threats to life,” which have triggered the duty to warn by law enforcement. He said the targets were members of the pro-Khalistan movement, which has the goal of carving out a separate Sikh state from Indian territory.

More to come.
